Latroye went overboard from the F/V Flying Ocean near Cape Ikolik in the Shelikof Strait, southwest of Karluk. The crew was deploying pots when Williams' right ankle got caught in the coiled line and he was subsequently dragged overboard with the pot. They attempted to throw Latroye a life ring as well as mark the spot with buoys, but Williams disappeared under the water. Searches of the area were unsuccessful in locating him.
